about

This was written and recorded as part of a class project which required me to take a piece of American literature and adapt the text into something else. I chose "Welcome to the Monkey House" by Kurt Vonnegut.

Also, I kept the error in the beginning just for fun. I don't know why.

lyrics

I look at you with
These animal eyes
You’re making me wish I were dead
You twist my every word
Into things
I wish I’d actually said

You alone have
The power to kill me
Now tell me I don’t understand love
You’ve got a firm grip
On my vital organs
But there’s more to human than opposable thumbs

We dance behind the glass
Because we’re animals at heart
You may not have noticed;
You lack the crucial part
And I won’t claim to know
Why we do the things we do
But I’ll tell you what I know:
All the world’s a zoo.

Genetic drift and
Natural selection
Will ensure we’re not all the same
And when I disappear
You’ll shout out, “Oh Billy!”
And I’ll tell you again that isn’t my name

We embrace each other
And I say my lines
Both devoid of emotion
For right now I’m
Your one and only
So it’s easy to coast through the motions

But you won’t
Love me in the morning and
That’s all right with me
We can’t all be our grandfathers
Who read their wives sweet poetry
But someday you’ll remember
This odd gift I’ve given you
And you will thank your God
That all the world’s a zoo.
